Solaris 9 & Fedora Core 1 Auditing

For the past couple of days I have been working on an audit checklist for Solaris and RedHat based systems. This has been a surprisingly challenging task, being that the two operating systems handle hardware and software diagnostics very differently. Although linux has the flexibilty to install on various x86 based systems, Sun’s ability to leverage the control it has on it’s own UltraSPARC architecture proves to be very beneficial. Either way, both platforms have pros and cons when it comes to standardizing on a method of harvesting information out of the operating environment. Ultimately my objective is to compile a standard list of desirable diagnostics, and produce the commands for gathering them in each OS. As I make more more progress I will publish the results somewhere on my website.

I have been thinking of such a thing for quite some time and I wanted to send it by email or ftp to another server, store it in a mysql database and present it on a web site for reference. The common set of commands would be a useful thing. If you got around to compiling one across Sun and Linux, Please put the information on the web site and drop me a link. -Ranga.
