Gears of War 2

This afternoon I finished the Epic Games slaughterfest, Gears of War 2 (gow2)…and was absolutely thrilled. All the groundwork and story development that we experienced in the first release of Gears really pays off in the sequel. The next chapter of Man vs Locust picks up where we left Marcus and company over two years ago, and things get crazy fast…

The five acts are well structured with some of the most creative level design I’ve seen in a while. (intestinal fortitude being my personal favorite) Several vehicle modes and timed events are introduced which did a great job of keeping my anxiety level higher than what should be acceptable for just sitting in front of the television. With a far richer storyline than the first, gow2 gives us a much closer look into the Locust’s world as well as an introduction to their awesomely wicked Queen.

I played through on the hardcore difficulty level with very few hangups. The boss fights were challenging yet not overly complicated, making story progression possible without the frustration of multiple checkpoint reloads. I did, however botch a ton of achievements in my first playthough, so I’ll be re-starting soon on the newly-unlocked insane mode.

Undoubtedly one of the best games for the Xbox 360; if you own the console and don’t have Gears of War2, then you’re obviously doing it all wrong.
